BP agrees record $4.5bn settlement over Gulf spill

BP has pleaded guilty to manslaughter over the deaths of 11 men in the Gulf of Mexico disaster and will pay $4.5bn (£2.8bn) in a record settlement with US authorities.

The total bill could yet rise significantly if BP is found to have committed gross negligence – a charge it has always denied – in a civil case that remains unresolved.

It will plead guilty to 11 felony charges of manslaughter over the deaths of the men.
